First Beehiiv Post For Cagey Comics - Let's Write

And get a Peek at the risque covers of Ruxy Vampire, Issue #2

Let’s Start w/ Writer’s Tools… for a full-time IT guy:

The Kurt Zauer Cagey Comics Writing Process

Ok, it’s a work in progress. To start, let’s get clear that I’m a comic book writer, not a novelist. Perhaps because a novel is terrifyingly intimidating and writing a bad novel is 1000 times worse than writing a bad comic book. Perhaps because I like the visuals. Regardless, press on, gentle reader. Let’s go over the basics:

  • LIBRARY - This is extremely helpful as it provides me with A Quiet Place. No, not the movie. It’s tough at home with 2 dogs, a better half, the TV, the stack of comics. The Mutants & Masterminds Power Profiles book sitting right there! I think you get the picture. Pack your backpack and take the trip. It’s necessary to get away. Quiet. Few Distractions. Maya Angelou gets a hotel room when she writes. Stephen King wrote Pet Sematary in an empty room at a store across the road… yes, THAT ROAD. It’s real.

  • LAPTOP - This goes without saying. It has WiFi so the internet can be a distraction. Thesaurus.com is my invaluable friend, however. An additional benefit of THE LIBRARY (see above) is the occasional passer-by. Train your mind to imagine this person as your 12th grade English teacher, or Cullen Bunn, or Anton Chigurh, or anyone else that would cluck disapprovingly at unrequired internet surfing. It works.

  • NOTEBOOKS - Again, a work in progress. Inspiration can strike at any moment and maybe your notebook is still in your backpack in the car. Well… I’ve got sticky notes right here and this other notebook that’s just an arm’s length away. Try to avoid this and consolidate. I plan on recopying all my notes, lore, etc. into a new centralized notebook… some day.

  • CAFFEINE - I am a low energy individual despite the fact that I enjoy exercise. Eating right and sleeping well can prove elusive at times. That caffeine bump is magic. It brings me a focus that I enjoy when used sparingly. Water always accompanies caffeine.

There you have it. My writing process. I can get the occasional few pages done at home, but that requires headphones and dark techno/synth music that I normally wouldn’t listen to.
