Hello!

I am THRILLED to say that interior art for Spectress & Sabanion Issue #6 is in the works. This is the best part of making comics! Topper Helmers is killing it as usual.

Here’s a page featuring Colonel Kwon and a few Blackcoats making their approach to the TUM. I have to say, I always love the noir style that Topper always uses for the colonel.

Here are Aneksi and the Blood Shade, locked in an epic struggle. Really looking forward to seeing Wesley’s colors on this!

Movies

28 Years Later - The Bone Temple. A different angle on zombies (infected with a “rage virus”)… but this one does fall into the humans-are-the-real-monsters trope a bit. Honestly though, that’s ok. It’s also a look at the cult mentality and how easily it can fall apart when people see things w/ their own eyes that don’t exactly line up. Definitely see the preceding movie first, 28 Years Later, but you don’t really need to see any of the previous “28 Later” movies (though they’re good too).

Streaming

The Mighty Nein. I’m a big fan of the Legend of Vox Machina series on Amazon. This is the same crew of voice actors with new characters and new adventures. Same great animation but, this one is a bit of a downer. Not saying it’s bad, I’m a fan of sordid backstories, but be ready for some characters driven by deep trauma.

Interview with the Vampire, Season 2. Couldn’t do this one. I enjoyed S1 but the melodrama overload in S2 was too much and the plot moved at a glacial pace. After a while… kinda felt like:

I hear you, Tom. I hear you.

Podcasts

Off Panel. Still listening to this one. There was a great episode w/ Scott Snyder, who’s currently writing the very successful Absolute Batman. Motivation comes from a lot of different places. Sometimes it comes from someone saying “it’s over” (in this case, the superhero genre) and wanting to prove them wrong. Also interesting to hear how stressed and unsure he was about how the series would be received. It’s a little comforting to know that even the heavy hitter have doubts sometimes.

Marveling at Marvel’s Marvels. Have to say I’ve really been enjoying listening to these guys. The premise is that Jonathan, a lifelong Marvel devotee, presents Marvel lore and Josef, who doesn't like comics and is significantly more grounded in reality, calls bullshit. It’s kind of a blast and a great way to catch up on your Marvel knowledge. Each week, Jonathan presents a Marvel character/movie/event and non-devotee Josef passes judgement w/ a letter grade. You can’t read everything, but this podcast is a great way to check out the characters and events you might have missed.

  • Employees found a Prohibition-era loaded Colt Model 1908 stashed inside the walls at at a Thornton, IL distillery.

  • The Masque of the Red Death is coming to theaters. Definitely a favorite of mine by Edgar Allan Poe.

  • In case you hadn’t guessed, George RR Martin has a lot on his plate.

  • Undertone… horror movie that gets under your skin via audio. Looks (and sounds) absolutely terrifying. I’ve seen a lot of hype for this in my feeds and the trailer looks really good.

  • Wow… want to know about the CIA? Check out this guy, former CIA Officer John Kiriakou. He went to jail for exposing the failures of “enhanced interrogation techniques.” Quite a guy and honestly… REALLY SURPRISED he can say all this.

  • Another Tomb Raider coming up… w/ Sansa!

Let’s GAME!

Have I told you what a gaming geek I was/am? Oh yeah, Dungeons and Dragons since 5th grade! It's funny but, back in the day, role playing games were pretty underground. Ok, yes, I'm going to wax a bit nostalgic here and give you the "back in my day" spiel. If you played Dungeons and Dragons back in the 80s and 90s, chances are girls didn't talk to you and you got sand kicked in your face. Girls didn't play TTRPGs in general. My buddies and I… jeez we played everything: D&D (basic and advanced), Star Frontiers, TMNT, Bushido, Car Wars, Shadowrun, Marvel Superheroes and probably a few others I can't remember. I still totally credit Peter Jackson and the Lord of the Rings movies for moving these geeky things into the mainstream (maybe even paving the way for the MCU). Thanks, Pete!

Anyway, add Mutants and Masterminds to that list too. Spectress & Sabanion were born as characters in a Mutants and Masterminds campaign. Yup, I’ve statted Ruxy up too. Maybe one day I’ll add their game stats to a Kickstarter. The publisher, Green Ronin, is running a Kickstarter for the next edition of the game. If you’re into TTRPGs, you honestly won’t find a better game to fit the superhero genre.

Thank YOU!

Still moving forward on Spectress & Sabanion #6 and planning out the next story arc. Ruxy #3 scripting is coming along as well! More magic, murk, and mayhem on the way. Couldn’t do this without you!
